Waterproof belt bags are among the most practical SUP accessories.

These comfortable and practical little helpers make the oversized drybags obsolete.

If you just want to carry a wallet, some snacks and the smartphone, a drybag is too much, but such a waterproof fanny pack for paddle boarding is just right.

When it comes to waterproof waist bags, it’s probably needless to say that choice is important. A very cheap model that is then not 100% waterproof would quickly end up costing hundreds to over thousands of dollars due to the broken electronic devices.

Instead of just price, you should put more emphasis on price vs. quality and reliability. I’ll tell you in this guide what you should look for when choosing.

Below, I present my favorites for the unofficial title of best waterproof fanny pack. After that, I’ll go into general factors that make a good bag. Then you can start looking for suitable waist bags yourself.

For even more practical tips on paddle board accessories, you should check out my guides on waterproof phone cases and paddle bags.

Before using a fanny pack, you should test the effect with paper first because there can always be single random product ion errors.

Guide: Buying the Right Waterproof Fanny Pack

I’ll now explain what you should look for when choosing. Equipped with the knowledge, you can then also compare appropriate offers yourself and make informed buying decisions.

  • IPX6, IPX7 and IPX8 standards
  • Material
  • Size
  • Extras

IPX6, IPX7 and IPX8 Standards

IPX classes are the most important point in any product description. The number after the IPX is the protection class for water protection. The classes IPX6, IPX7 and IPX8 are in question:

  • IPX6: These bags offer protection against strong jets of water. They remain waterproof even against being sprayed with a fire hose from a distance of 3 meters (10 ft) for three minutes. However, these models have not been tested underwater.
  • IPX7: This category of fanny packs guarantee protection when fully submerged for a limited time. Specifically, submerged at 1 meter of water depth, they keep the inside dry for at least 3 minutes.
  • IPX8: Bags with this victory withstand complete submersion for an indefinite period of time. They are tested at 1 meter (3,2 ft) water depth for half an hour. If the contents are still dry after this time, the bags receive the seal.

For paddle boarding, your fanny pack should be of the IPX7 or IPX8 type to really provide protection if you ever fall in the water. IPX6 would only offer protection against the splashing water or heavy rain.

Note: Outdoor gear that is labeled waterproof is usually only tested to IPX6 and therefore does not necessarily hold up underwater.

Material

Most models are made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or polyurethane (PU) materials. These synthetic materials are water repellent and easy to clean.

Cleaning with a damp cloth is usually completely sufficient.

Size

When buying a fanny pack, the size is also important. Should it only be a very small model for car keys and smartphone or must still fit food inside? While this decision is up to you, I would also pay attention to the length of the belt.

In any case, the belt should reach around the hips or stomach. Some models can also be worn as a shoulder bag if the strap is long enough. When paddle boarding you should rather wear the bag crosswise, so you would have to measure the distance from your left (right) hip bone to your right (left) shoulder.

Extras

Some bags offer a see-through side. This is made for cell phones and tablets, as it allows you to operate the devices without getting wet or dirty.

Conclusion

I hope that this guide to waterproof fanny packs has helped. It should also be mentioned that these waist bags can be used for a variety of activities besides padle boarding.

For other types of water sports, when jogging or in heavy rain, these pouches will keep your valuables dry.

For paddle boarding, these bags allow you to carry your valuables like your smartphone and car keys even without a drybag. You can also easily access your stuff and take a picture or eat a snack.

I’m a big fan of the freedom of the fanny pack. You don’t have to pack your board with luggage, but have a small bag on your hip that serves exactly the same purpose.

Whichever bag you choose, I hope you have fun on your next paddle board trip!

Hi, my name is Max. In 2016, on my first SUP trip, I was still a bit shaky on the SUP board. But quickly the ambition grabbed me and my passion for SUP was ignited. That’s why I founded stand-up-paddling.org the same year. Our mission is to help beginners discover this sport and bring more transparency into the market with our in-depth product reviews.
