Thurso Surf, a manufacturer active in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia, now sells 3 different paddle boards under the Waterwalker name: The Thurso Surf Waterwalker 120, the Thurso Surf 126 and the Thurso Surf Waterwalker 132.
The series has been completely revised and the smallest model is completely new. We already tested the predecessors a few years ago and found them to be very good.
Even more pleasant that we now had the opportunity to test the 3 new models in all 3 color variants. Since 2016, we always stay on the pulse of the paddle board time and present you an optimal overview of all 3 variants in a joint test report!
Both versions of the Thurso Surf Waterwalker are great paddleboarding boards for beginners. Above all, the great workmanship, the numerous features on the board and the extensive accessory package included with the board make this paddleboard set so outstanding. Hardly any other manufacturer can match Thurso Surf in terms of quality. However, the Thurso Surf Waterwalker isn't available often.

Short on Time? Here’s the Most Important:
All 3 boards are inflatable allround paddle boards, which are well made, come with a lot of and high quality accessories and are well suited for longer tours with the two luggage nets.
On top of that, there’s the familiar wooden look that the company has been going for for a long time…brand new is the choice of 3 different colors: red (Crimson), turquoise (Turquoise) and orange (Tangerine).
Below I will go into more detail about the Thurso Surf Waterwalker 120 (305 x 76 x 15 cm), the Waterwalker 126 (320 cm x 79 cm x 15 cm) and the Waterwalker 132 (335 cm x 81 cm x 15 cm), compare the boards and tell you who should buy which model.
While the 126 and 132 have always existed, the 120 has now been added to the board lineup as a particularly compact board for smaller and lightweight paddlers.
Info: In case you’re wondering what the number in the Thurso Surf Waterwalker’s name means…it indicates the length of the boards in units of “inches”. For example, 120 tells you that the board is 120 inches = about 305 cm long!
As before, the company relies on a fin setup consisting of 3 removable pieces in the Smartlock system. This gives you the choice between different settings and allows you to adjust the riding characteristics. In terms of material construction, there was an innovation, because now carbon rails provide even more stiffness.
There have also been some changes in the features and accessories. For example, the structure of the deckpad has been redesigned and an action cam mount has been added to the nose.
Backpack trolley, 3-piece paddle (carbon), 3 removable fins (smartlock system), coiled leash (spiral safety line), triple action air pump, repair kit.
Of course you can find all details about the equipment and the scope of delivery in the respective sections below.

Construction
All Waterwalker paddle boards are classic allround boards of different sizes. The shape is classically characterized by the rounded nose. The tail is straight.
The board tip is slightly bent upwards, which is called Noserocker. This allows the boards to cope better with smaller waves, as the tip does not dive so easily under water.
Here again the dimensions in the overview:
Waterwalker 120: 305 x 76 x 15 cm (10′ x 30″ x 6″)
Waterwalker 126: 320 x 79 x 15 cm (10’6″ x 31″ x 6″)
Waterwalker 132: 335 x 81 x 15 cm (11’0″ x 32″ x 6″)
The size differences of course also affect the volume of the individual air chambers and thus the load capacity…More information on this in the following section “Load capacity”.
For the setup, the manufacturer relies on 2 smaller side fins and a large center fin, all of which are removable via the Smartlock system. This setup gives you the greatest possible flexibility.
You can find out in detail what effects the various settings have under “Areas of application and handling characteristics”.
However, they are not full-fledged touring boards. SUPs of the touring class offer with the narrow design and a length of at least 350 cm significantly more directional stability.
The better directional stability is especially noticeable on long trips, as the board breaks out sideways less and thus the paddle side has to be changed less often. With touring boards, higher speeds can be built up as a result.
Load Capacity
Compared to the previous versions, Thurso Surf is much more cautious when specifying the recommended load of the new versions.
According to the manufacturer, this is 68 kg (maximum 118 kg) for the 305 cm board (120) and 81 kg (maximum 136 kg) for the 320 cm board (126).
The large 335 cm model (132) is suitable for paddlers up to 95 kg and is supposed to carry a maximum of 150 kg.
Here, we definitely have to commend the manufacturer for these differentiated specifications. Exaggerated levies are the order of the day with many, that is clearly not the case here…quite the opposite!
In our opinion, you can easily pack the boards with a good 10% more without any noticeable restrictions.
After that must not necessarily be the end, but from this point on the boards will then sink increasingly deeper…a deformation occurs much later thanks to the stiff construction with carbon rails!
Areas of Application and Driving Characteristics
The Thurso Surf Waterwalker paddle board is basically and in any size an allrounder board, which is best suited for different areas of use. The sufficiently wide Waterwalker paddle boards are best used for trips over canals, lakes and rivers with slow flowing speed.
Especially for paddle board beginners, boards like the Thurso Surf Waterwalker are handy, because the wide built paddle boards offer a very high level of tipping stability. And the setup with the three (removable) fins makes the Waterwalker SUPs even more stable in the water.
With the classic 2+1 fin setup, stability and maneuverability is at its best. For beginners and in challenging conditions, this is always the best option.
If you opt for the single center fin, the straight line is more emphasized. The board then stays on track very nicely in a straight line and you can implement a fast paddling rhythm, resulting in higher speeds. This is optimal for touring.
In shallow water (e.g. on river tours) the sole use of the two side fins is also possible. This minimizes the draft. In practice, however, this setting is not very useful in the long run, as it makes the board difficult to steer.
The Thurso Surf Waterwalker SUP boards are also well suited for medium SUP tours with a lot of luggage. Namely, the two luggage nets offer enough space to attach several drybags, water bottles or other equipment underneath.
Also always very popular is the mounting option for a kayak seat (sold separately), which can be attached to the 4 side D-rings. These D-rings are positioned so that you can also use 2 of them together with an optional shoulder strap to carry the board well balanced. A matching second paddle blade is also on the extra charge list.
We also find the side-mounted paddle holders particularly practical. The Velcro straps allow you to secure the paddle shaft perfectly during breaks or transport.
All in all, the Thurso Surf Waterwalker models offer an absolutely versatile range of uses that is rounded off very well by the well thought-out elements. They fully live up to their board class, the allrounders, and prove to be real all-rounders!
Basically, shorter paddle boards are always more maneuverable, while longer models glide better and are more true to track. Apart from your weight, you should also take this into account when choosing the right size.
Material & Weight
The Thurso Surf Waterwalker has always used the double-layer dropstitch process in its manufacture, where two layers of PVC are bonded together to make the shell even stronger and more durable. In the so-called dropstitch core, plastic threads connect the top and bottom sides.
What is completely new, however, is that the dropstitch threads are now woven together (woven dropstitch). In addition, a layer of carbon fabric is now used to reinforce the side surfaces.
The transitions to the side faces are also equipped with stabilizing bands (rail bands). These adjustments have a noticeably positive effect on stiffness.
The development of inflatable boards has picked up considerably in recent years, but the edges are still a frequent weak point. For this reason, it is very good that Thurso Surf has additionally reinforced these sensitive edges. This gives hope for a long service life.
Another plus point that distinguishes carbon as a material is its low weight. The 3 new models of Thurso Surf Waterwalker therefore now bring a good bit less on the scale. The weight is 10.2 kg for the 305 cm board (120), 10.9 kg for the 320 cm model (126) and 11.8 kg for the 335 cm copy (132).
Considering the high-quality construction, these are really good values that allow for trouble-free transport and easy handling.
Design
By now, each size is available in 3 different colors: red (Crimson), turquoise (Turquoise) and orange (Tangerine). The trendy wood look has been retained and now looks even more natural. The longitudinal stripes have been significantly reduced and made more discreet, except for the colored one in the middle.
The deckpad is now 3 colored and diagonally divided into 3 areas. Here you will also find a graphically designed hexagon with the model designation. The manufacturer and Waterwalker lettering can be found on all sides of the boards.
The rails are designed in the respective main color in the front area and white in the back. Here you can find again all details about the boards and also a reference to the carbon layer (Carbon Enhanced). The tread is white and is set off by the central colored, longitudinal stripe with arrow-shaped interruptions. We really like the new design, what do you think?
Workmanship
In this important point, we noticed slight adhesive residue on the middle carrying handle and a D-ring on 2 of the 3 test boards, but otherwise there was nothing to criticize.
On the contrary, the workmanship was otherwise very clean. Especially in the glued seams and the material transitions were no defects.
That is altogether, even in this price range, not a matter of course and speaks absolutely for the manufacturer, who also has a good reputation in this regard. A manufacturer warranty of 2 years underlines the quality claims!
Other features
In the following I will discuss the other features of the Thurso Surf Waterwalker boards:
- Deckpad: The boards are each equipped with a large EVA deckpad. Meanwhile, the company relies on a structure with small 6-corners, reminiscent of honeycombs (Honeycomb) and containing a small T. The deckpad feels pleasantly soft and offers a really secure stand even when wet.
- 2 luggage nets: The special feature of the Waterwalker is that these boards are equipped with two luggage nets at once. In the front there is a luggage net with 6 D-rings and in the back there is one on 4 D-rings.
The nets can be used to secure one or even more drybags, a waterproof backpack or other equipment and luggage underneath.
- 3 carrying straps: Directly in the center of the board is the central strap, this is most important to carry the board alone and also shows you the most stable point for your feet at the same time. At the tail and the nose is attached to each another handle. These facilitate the transport and handling in the water. All carrying straps are padded, are made of sturdy strap material and are embroidered with the Thurso Surf lettering.
- 5 free D-rings: At the tail you can attach the included coiled leash. A separately available kayak seat can be mounted on the 4 side D-rings or an optional shoulder strap can be attached.
- side paddle holder: Practical is also the paddle holder centered right on the paddle board. The paddle can be attached to these 2 Velcro cuffs so that it does not slip off the board.
- 2 in 1 action cam mount: A GoPro or other commercially available action cam can be attached to the nose. You can either click or screw the cam. Very handy to document your paddle board adventures.
- removable 2+1 fin setup in the Smartlock system: both the two small side fins and the large center fin are removable via the practical Smartlock system.
Accessories
Accessories are one of the things that Thurso Surf Waterwalker paddle boards can shine with. Namely, the purchase already includes a complete and high-quality basic equipment. This is especially convenient for beginners.
For beginners, these complete sets are worthwhile. When purchased individually, the accessories would cost easily over 200 euros. With these sets, you can save significantly. And another advantage is that you do not have to pay attention to the compatibility of the equipment …
The connection of the air pump fits guaranteed on the valve of the board and also the backpack offers space for the rolled up Waterwalker paddle board as well as all the accessories.
Compared to other SUPs, the various versions of the Thurso Surf Waterwalker are a bit pricey, but the accessories alone more than make up for that. Not only does the scope of delivery turn out to be very extensive, but the quality is also convincing:
The following equipment is included:
- Thurso Surf Waterwalker Backpack Trolley: The backpack in anthracite offers enough space for the entire set in the large main compartment with a surrounding zipper. In the interior there is also a spacious net. Smaller items can be stowed in the front pocket with additional transparent compartment. Thanks to the integrated wheels, it can be pulled behind comfortably even on longer distances. It has 4 carrying straps and an address window. The carrying straps (+ hip belt) are wide and padded just like the back part. The side straps can be used to adjust the volume and additionally fix the contents. An overall very good, comfortable model that fits well with the quality of the boards.
- 3-Piece Thurso Surf Waterwalker Carbon Paddle: Included with the Thurso Surf Waterwalker is a high-quality, infinitely adjustable (180 – 220 cm) SUP paddle board with a carbon shaft that weighs only 900 grams and can be easily disassembled into three parts for transport. Especially on longer tours, the lower weight is noticeable compared to the models made of aluminum, as these models often weigh much more and can also not float. A length scale is printed on the handle section, and the paddle blade section is double-secured with one click and one fold connection each.
- Thurso Surf Waterwalker triple-action air pump with pressure indicator (gauge): Included in the set is a triple action air pump with pressure gauge (pressure gauge). The pump has 2 pistons and 3 modes of operation. In the first stage, it works with both pistons in double-action mode, which means that you pump air into the board both when pulling up and pushing down. In the second stage, both pistons are in use in single action mode. In the third stage, only one piston is working. These graduations allow you to conveniently reduce the resistance as the counterpressure increases. The individual stages can be switched via a rotary switch. If you screw the hose to the other opening, you can pump air out of the board to make it easier to roll up. The base can be folded and the handles are removable, so the pump can be stored in a space-saving way. On the integrated pressure indicator you can reliably read the values from a certain threshold. A really good and very powerful model. 2 seals for optimal fit with other paddle boards are included.
- Thurso Surf Waterwalker Coiled-Leash (spiral safety leash): Included in the kit is a coiled leash that only expands to its full length when it falls into the water. One end is attached to the rear D-ring and the comfortably padded Velcro cuff can be attached to the ankle or below the knee. This keeps your board close to you, even in the water. What’s especially casual is that the leashes come in matching colors.
- 3 removable Thurso Surf Waterwalker fins (Smartlock system): Both side fins and the large center fin are removable, dolphin-shaped and are attached to the board via the so-called Smartlock system. To mount, simply insert the desired fin into the rail, push it down and fix it with a small, integrated lever. The system is very fast and convenient. Unfortunately, the market for spare parts is in the hands of a few manufacturers. Here you can find a guidebook that deals in detail with the sometimes annoying procurement of Smartlock fins.
- Thurso Surf Waterwalker Repairkit: This small kit in the orange screw box consists of 2 PVC patches, a small tube with glue, a brush, a valve wrench and spare parts for the Smartlock fin boxes. Small defects you can repair yourself and check or replace the valve.
