In my opinion, the Bluefin Cruise is currently the best paddle board on the market, one of the most sold boards and also convinced us in our paddle board test.

The model is so successful that the British manufacturer Bluefin now offers it in four different sizes.

The different variants of the Bluefin Cruise:

  • Bluefin Cruise Junior → For kids
  • Bluefin Cruise 10’8 → For beginners
  • Bluefin Cruise 12 → For beginners and advanced users
  • Bluefin Cruise Tandem → paddle board for two persons
  • Bluefin Cruise Carbon → for advanced and real paddle boarding veterans

In my review, I mainly focus on the Bluefin Cruise 10’8 (325 cm) and the Bluefin Cruise 12’0 (366 cm) because these two boards are the most popular.

Look at our video review of the Bluefin Cruise:

Construction

The Bluefin Cruise 10’8 (325 cm) is a fairly typical allrounder. With a width of 83.5 cm, the board is very stable in the water.

The dimensions also come close to the typical all-round board, which usually measures 320 cm x 80 x 15 cm (10’6″ x 32″ x 6″).

Front of the Bluefin Cruise

The advantage of these boards is that they offer a lot of tipping stability. This is especially beneficial for beginners who still find it a bit difficult to keep their balance on the board.

All-round boards like the Bluefin Cruise 10’8” therefore place less emphasis on top speeds and more on stability and riding pleasure.

Extremely elongated shaped boards like the Bluefin Sprint, on the other hand, are uncompromisingly designed for high speeds. Due to the elongated shape, these are very difficult to ride for beginners.

Here you need a good feeling for keeping your balance. And maneuverability also suffers from the design of the racing boards.

A middle ground between all-round and race boards are touring boards. The point is this:

All-rounders offer a secure footing and the rounded shape makes them maneuverable.

On longer tours, however, the majority of the time is only paddled straight ahead. This calls for boards that brake less and offer better directional stability.

This is where touring boards come into play. Typically, these boards measure 350 cm (11’6″) or more in length and are about 80 cm (32″) wide. The Bluefin Cruise 12′ falls right into this category, measuring 366 cm in length and 83.5 (33″) cm in width.

For beginners, touring boards are often a bit wobbly. Also, kilometer-long tours are typically not on the plan in the beginning.

Advanced paddlers who already have a season under their belt, on the other hand, feel really comfortable with touring boards like the 366 cm long Bluefin Cruise 12. The boards hold the track better and thus higher speeds can be reached.

And those who already have water sports experience or are already planning longer trips can also go straight for a touring board like the Bluefin Cruise 12.

Bluefin Cruise 10'8
9.4/10Our Score

The Bluefin Cruise is one of the best SUP boards on the market. What convinces me most about the Cruise SUPs is the high-quality workmanship of the boards and accessories. Clearly, no quality has been spared here. Last but not least, the Bluefin Cruise comes with an incredible five-year warranty.

With dimensions of 325 cm (10.8′) in length and 83.5 (33″) cm in width, the Bluefin Cruise 10’8 corresponds to the typical all-rounder.

The Bluefin Cruise 12, on the other hand, is a touring board that measures 366 cm x 83 cm (12′ x 32″).

It should be noted that both the Bluefin Cruise 10’8 and Bluefin Cruise 12 measure 16 cm in thickness. At just over 6 inches (15 cm), the board is much stiffer than narrower boards.

The biggest advantage is that more air fits into the thicker boards, which provides more buoyancy (i.e., a higher load capacity) and more stability.

Beginners should just stay away from only 10 cm thick board. Indeed, the first inflatable boards that appeared in the early 2010s measured only 10 cm and bent in the middle in rows.

In addition to the improved production processes, which in any case ensured significantly more robustness and significantly extended the service life, the boards therefore also became thicker and thicker over time.

Load Capacity

The load capacity of the boards is 130 kilograms for the 325 cm long Cruise 10’8 and 140 kilograms for the 366 cm long Bluefin Cruise 12, which means that even heavy paddlers, large paddlers, a paddler with a child or two (light) paddlers can ride on the Bluefin boards at the same time.

(For two people, however, the Bluefin Cruise Tandem is best suited. The tandem comes with two kayak seats and two (double) paddles).

Many other manufacturers set the carrying capacity of their boards a bit high. Therefore, as a rule, a small discount must be expected.

Bluefin’s boards, however, are excluded from this rule. In fact, Bluefin Cruise SUPs carry the specified weight.

In addition, Bluefin’s boards are inflated to a higher pressure (15 to 18 PSI) than other manufacturers’ boards (8 to 15 PSI).

Because of this and the thicker construction, the Bluefin Cruise 10’8 can carry more load than boards from other brands (with comparable dimensions).

An example of this is the Aqua Marina Beast, where top performance can no longer be expected from a load of 100 kilograms.

Areas of Application and Driving Characteristics

The Bluefin Cruise 10’8 is an all-round board and – as its name suggests – can be used in a variety of ways. For beginners, all-rounders are exciting precisely for this reason.

After all, as a beginner you don’t yet know what you particularly enjoy about paddle boarding.

Allrounders are a good choice for lakes, shorter and medium tours, unhurried trips with the family, trips over canals and surfing small waves. Beginners can try their hand at many parts of the sport.

The Cruise 10’8 does not reach top speeds, but is still built quite sporty.

The tapered nose reduces water resistance, and the rather elongated design ensures good straight-line stability.

The nose of the Bluefin Cruise tapers to a point, which makes for better straight-line stability.

I would therefore describe the Cruise 10’8 as a tilt-resistant entry-level model that nevertheless sets sporty accents.

Especially the three removable fins in the Smartlock system ensure that the board can be tuned to different conditions.

The three completely removable fins provide a high degree of tilt stability and flexibility. On the Bluefin Cruise 10’8 2020, all three fins are removable, which is especially handy for transport.

With the classic 2+1 fin setup, stability and maneuverability is at its best. For beginners, this is always the best option.

If you decide to use the single center fin, the straight line is more emphasized. The board will then stay on track very nicely in a straight line, and you can implement a fast paddling rhythm, resulting in higher speeds.

In shallow water (e.g. on river tours) it is also possible to use the two side fins alone. This minimizes the draft.

In practice, however, this setting is usually not very useful, as it makes the board difficult to steer.

Those who like to take a sportier approach, already have concrete tours in mind for which some kilometers have to be made good, or have already gained experience in handling paddle boards, are probably best advised with the Bluefin Cruise 12.

The tracking of the more elongated board is quickly noticed with the Cruise 12. The 366 cm long model is particularly convincing on longer tours with passages in which a lot of riding is in a straight line.

On the one hand, the board deviates less from the direction of motion, so that the paddle side has to be changed less often. And for another, a higher speed can be built up with the Cruise 12.

With the Cruise 10’8 and the Cruise 12′, I especially liked the high-quality finished edges. When inflated, both boards are extremely stiff and especially the edges are extremely hard, which allows for fast turns.

In my opinion, boards from Bluefin can easily keep up with brand boards in terms of quality, which are clearly in the four-digit range.

Material and Weight

The Bluefin Cruise is made of several layers of PVC that have been glued together. In the production process, the so-called drop stitch method is used. Boards manufactured by means of this process are particularly stiff.

The shells of Bluefin boards are also extremely stable and can withstand a (very high) air pressure of up to 28 PSI (almost 2 bar). At this pressure, most boards from other manufacturers already give way.

The average paddle board weighs 10 to 14 kilograms (22-31 lbs). So the Bluefin Cruise boards are right in the normal range, weighing 12.6 kilograms (Cruise 10’8) and 14 kilograms (Cruise 12).

In general, the transport of inflatable paddle boards is very easy:

After a tour, simply deflate, roll up the deflated cover, then stow it in the backpack and the bag can then be easily carried.

Experience has shown that carrying the backpack, which usually weighs 15 to 20 kilograms (board, accessories, other equipment, provisions, etc.), is no problem for distances of up to one kilometer.

However, longer hikes with the backpack on your back are still exhausting.

Workmanship

In terms of workmanship, Bluefin boards play in the top league. For a reasonable price, you get a high-quality board with the Bluefin Cruise (including extensive accessories). The Cruise is also very durable.

Another good orientation are the Amazon customer reviews. I have read many of them. The vast majority of these are very positive.

Above all, the good workmanship, the extensive accessories and the good price-performance ratio are praised.

The Bluefin Cruise convinces with a very good workmanship. I did not notice any glue residue or edges where work was not done properly.

The Bluefin Cruise boards cost a little more than other models, but in direct comparison it is noticeable that these cheap paddle boards are usually also less well made.

You can also expect less performance from these boards. Problems with glue residue, a strong chemical smell or stains on the board are unfortunately often part of the low-priced segment.

Design

In the new model, especially the design of the deck has been revised. The deck pad is now designed in a dark anthracite and black, with graduated stripes in matching colors. Furthermore, the name and size of the board are shown on it in white and blue.

The basic colors of the board are white and various shades of blue. In the area of the top, the manufacturer has applied its logo. The underside is white and has a blue design band running down the middle with the Bluefin lettering.

The surrounding rails are also blue and labeled with the manufacturer’s name. To me, the design makes a really good, sporty impression and especially the underside is strongly reminiscent of a surfboard.

Other Features

The Bluefin Cruise has a number of other features that I would like to mention briefly:

  • EVA Deckpad: The Cruise is equipped with an EVA deck pad. The large, dark gray deck pad has a diamond-like structure that ensures a secure footing and feels soft at the same time. Even when wet, the EVA deck pad provides a good grip. The crocodile/diamond deck pad provides a very secure footing.
The crocodile/diamond deck pad provides a very secure stand.
  • Mountable Kayak Seat: Another special feature is the mountable kayak seat. Many paddle boards now allow you to retrofit such a seat, but on the Bluefin Cruise it’s especially convenient. The Bluefin Cruise can thus be used twice: As a paddle board and as a kayak. The kayak seat, which is included, can be attached to the central D-rings.
The kayak seat, which is included, can be attached to the central D-rings.
  • Additional Carrying Handles: The Bluefin Cruise is equipped with two additional carrying handles in addition to the central carrying strap. One handle each is located at the front and rear end of the board. The handles make it easier to carry the board.
  • Luggage Net: In addition, the Cruise has a luggage net that can be used to transport a water bottle or a drybag. A positive feature is the additional neoprene cords, which make it possible to carry more equipment.
  • 3 Removable Fins: Both the small side fins and the center fin are removable in seconds via the Smartlock system.
  • Actioncam Mount: The mount allows you to attach a GoPro or other action camera to the front of the board. In addition, the action cam mount is protected with a rubber.

Accessories

All versions of the Bluefin Cruise include a range of accessories. In addition to the board, the scope of delivery includes an air pump, a carrying backpack, a leash, a mountable kayak seat and a (double) paddle.

With the equipment from the scope of delivery, you are already fully equipped for the first paddleboarding tours.

The accessories would cost a lot of money if bought separately. With such an offer, you can save a lot of money compared. Alone, the items included in the scope of delivery of the Bluefin Cruise, would cost individually loose £100.

  • Bluefin Cruise board bag: The included backpack has extra padding on the shoulder straps for comfort. The backpack has an overall high-quality feel and can be used for other purposes as well.
  • 4 Piece Bluefin Cruise Paddle: Included is a GRP paddle. Paddles made of glass fiber reinforced plastic (also called fiberglass) are not just a gimmick. It is a full paddle made from a high quality material. Fiberglass paddles are lightweight and strong.
The included paddle is very suitable for beginners as well as advanced paddlers. Other manufacturers only include an aluminum paddle with their boards, which is heavy, doesn’t last long and sometimes doesn’t even float. With the Bluefin Cruise, the story is quite different.
The paddle included with the Cruise has a high-quality finish and eliminates the need to buy another paddle. The special feature of the included paddle is that it can be converted into a double paddle. The two-piece paddle can be easily converted into a kayak paddle with an additional center piece and a second paddle blade. This way you can really use the paddle board as a kayak.
Unlike paddle boarding, kayaking is done with a double paddle. The paddle is adjustable in height and can thus be adjusted to different body sizes (and thus paddlers). A maximum length of 2.20 meters (2.25 meters as double paddle) can be adjusted, which is perfectly adequate for paddlers with a body height of up to 2 meters.
The Bluefin Cruise Carbon released in 2019 comes with a carbon paddle instead of the GRP paddle. Carbon is even lighter and more robust than fiberglass. The disadvantage of carbon, however, is that the material is more susceptible to collisions. So in shallow waters and when getting in and out of the water, you need to be more careful.
  • Bluefin Cruise Coiled-Leash (Spiral Safety Leash): The leash included is a so-called coiled leash, which only expands to its full length when it falls into the water. This is an important safety measure, because if you use a simple leash, you run the risk of it getting caught on underwater plants or rocks. This can lead to nasty falls.
  • Switchable Bluefin Cruise Double Action Pump with Pressure Gauge (Manometer): The air pump is a modern model that blows air into the board when pushing down and when pulling up. When the back pressure rises towards the end, you can easily switch to single-stroke operation so that the board only fills with air when you push down. This saves a lot of power.
  • 3 removable Bluefin Cruise Fins: Both side fins and the large center fin are removable and are attached to the board via the so-called Smartlock system. To mount, simply insert the desired fin into the rail, push it down and fix it with a small, integrated lever. The system is very fast and convenient. Unfortunately, the market for spare parts is also in the hands of these companies. Here you can find a guide that deals in detail with the sometimes annoying procurement of Smartlock fins.
  • Waterproof Bluefin Cruise Cell Phone Case: In this transparent case, your smartphone finds a protected place and can even be operated through the film. With the loop, you can hang your phone around you and have it quickly at hand when needed. A very useful gimmick.
  • Bluefin Cruise Repairkit: This small set in the blue screw box consists of 2 PVC patches, a small tube with glue and a valve wrench. You can repair small defects yourself and check or replace the valve.

FAQ

Can you ride the Bluefin Cruise with more than one person?

Yes, both the Cruise 10’8 and Cruise 12 can be ridden with multiple people. The maximum load is 130 kilograms and 140 kilograms respectively. So two light adults can ride on one board.
However, it works better with a child and an adult on board. So it’s a great SUP board for families! Moreover, too high a load does not cause the board to sink right away. Wet feet and somewhat strenuous paddling are not excluded, however.

For paddling with two people, however, the Bluefin Cruise Tandem is best. Not only does this board offer a higher load capacity of 160 kilograms and, with a length of 427 cm, even more space on the deck, but the scope of delivery also includes two kayak seats and two (double) paddles.

How much PSI is the Bluefin Cruise pumped up to?

Bluefin’s boards are inflated to 15 to 18 PSI (a little over one bar). With the included air pump, this is done in 6 minutes.
Faster is always possible, but you still need the strength in your arms to paddle. Alternatively, an electric SUP pump can be used.

Which is better? Bluefin Cruise or iRocker SUP Boards?

Both Bluefin and iRocker are among the higher quality manufacturers. There are some parallels in the features of the SUP boards, such as the use of the fins in the Smartlock system. In our tests, however, the Bluefin models have always performed slightly better.

Especially the Bluefin Cruise takes first place in our big SUP board test for the repeated time and absolutely sets the standards in terms of stiffness, resilience and durability.

In addition, the Bluefin Cruise is also available in the carbon version, where these features are emphasized even more. Bluefin also scores better in terms of the scope and quality of accessories.

Which is better? Bluefin Cruise or SUP boards from Aqua Marina?

Without question, the Bluefin Cruise is superior in quality to Aqua Marina’s all-around boards. The material construction is significantly higher quality, so the construction is much stiffer, more resilient and ultimately more powerful.
The Aqua Marina SUP boards score more with a very wide selection of boards of different sizes and are especially recommended for paddlers with a limited budget and little previous experience.
The 3 removable fins and the flexibility that results from this also speaks for the Bluefin Cruise.

What is the difference between Bluefin Cruise and Bluefin Cruise Carbon?

There are three main differences between the (normal) Bluefin Cruise and the Bluefin Cruise Carbon. First, the accessories are different. The Carbon version comes with a carbon paddle instead of the fiberglass one. And the double-action pump has been upgraded to a triple-action pump.
Second, the Bluefin Cruise Carbon has an additional separate air chamber. In the event of a serious accident where one air chamber is damaged, the other would be able to keep the board afloat on its own.
And thirdly, work has been done on the rails as well as the stiffness. The even harder edges improve the riding characteristics (agility and speed) noticeably. Overall, the board is also even stiffer than the (normal) Bluefin Cruise, although it must be said that already the normal version is really top in terms of stiffness.
In my opinion, the Bluefin Cruise Carbon is worth buying for particularly ambitious paddlers. In the driving characteristics, an improvement is noticeable and of course the better accessories (carbon paddle & better pump) justifies the higher price. However, beginners or occasional paddlers are already well advised with the normal Cruise.

What is the difference between the Bluefin Cruise 2019 and the Bluefin Cruise 2020?

Currently, Bluefin offers two different models under the Bluefin Cruise name in their online store and on Amazon.
Essentially, there are seven improvements that Bluefin has implemented in the Bluefin Cruise 2020:
Better action cam mount: Instead of the mount from the previous model, the Bluefin Cruise 2020 has a mount that action cams have to be screwed into. In direct comparison, the new board appears to be of somewhat higher quality.
Extra neoprene cords on the luggage net: This allows a bit more luggage to be transported on the new board.
New design: The look is the most noticeable difference between the two Bluefin Cruise boards. I personally like the new design better, but that’s purely a personal thing.
Improved kayak seat D-rings: the D-rings in the center of the board have been specially labeled and additionally protected with a rubber.
Better Paddle: The paddle that comes with the Bluefin Cruise 2020 has a new design and also comes in at a lighter weight. I’ll take a closer look, but at first glance, the Bluefin Cruise 2020 paddle looks like the SUP paddle that comes with the Bluefin Cruise Carbon.
All fins removable: On the Bluefin Cruise 2020, all three fins are removable. On the previous model, however, you could only remove the main fin. This makes transport easier and different fin setups can now be tested.
Additional fin pins included: The Bluefin Cruise 2020 also uses the Smart-Lock fin system. What is new here, however, is that replacement pins are included for the two smaller side fins and the main fin.
This has of course the advantage that if the pin should break off (has not happened to me so far with any board), you can repair this damage with the spare parts themselves.
In summary, it can be said that in addition to many nice gimmicks, the Bluefin Cruise has experienced a significant upgrade here. The better paddle and removable fins are noticeable advantages.
This does not justify a too large surcharge, but for moderate additional costs (50-100€) I would probably rather take the new model. (Especially since it is simply more stylish ;-))

How good is the Bluefin Cruise?

In our SUP board review, the Bluefin Cruise absolutely convinced us. The board has a high-quality finish, comes with high-quality accessories and is very safe in the water.

For whom is the Bluefin Cruise suitable?

The Bluefin Cruise is great for beginners and advanced sailors. With its high load capacity, it is also a great SUP board for heavy paddlers, tall paddlers or two light paddlers.

How heavy is the Bluefin Cruise?

The Bluefin Cruise is available in different variants. The 325 cm long variant weighs 12 kg, while the 366 cm long variant weighs 14 kg. With its high load capacity, it is a great SUP board for heavy paddlers, big paddlers or two light paddlers, among others.

Is the Bluefin Cruise suitable for beginners?

The Bluefin Cruise is great for beginners and advanced paddlers. Especially the 325 cm long version offers a high tipping stability. With its high load capacity, it is also a great SUP board for heavy paddlers, big paddlers or two light paddlers.

How long is the Bluefin Cruise?

The Bluefin Cruise is available in different variants. The short variant is 325 cm long and a typical all-round SUP board. The 366 cm long version, on the other hand, falls into the class of touring SUP boards. Thus, the board is suitable for beginners as well as for advanced riders.

For which waters is the Bluefin Cruise suitable?

The Bluefin Cruise 10’8 is an all-round board and can – as the name suggests – be used in a variety of ways. For beginners, all-rounders are exciting for exactly this reason. Allrounders are a good choice for lakes, shorter and medium tours, leisurely trips with the family, trips over canals and surfing small waves.

Conclusion

The Bluefin Cruise is one of the best SUP boards on the market. For beginners, the Bluefin Cruise 10’8 is an excellent choice. Advanced paddlers better reach for the Bluefin Cruise 12. The touring board is top for longer distances and high speeds.

What convinces me most about the Cruise SUPs is the high-quality workmanship of the boards and accessories. Clearly, no quality has been spared here. In direct comparison with boards of other brands, it is also quickly noticed that the Cruise is really stiff.

Furthermore, I like that even the entry-level model Cruise 10’8 offers a lot of stability, but is still built quite sporty. In my opinion, the balance between stability and speed is very good. Longer tours can therefore also be driven well with this board.

One thing that also came up increasingly in the comments is that Bluefin yes quite high prices for their boards aufruft. This is true at first glance, but I think that this is justified by the better accessories, the really good quality and the top driving characteristics. Not for nothing is the Bluefin Cruise as the best SUP board on my ranking list.

In addition, with inexpensive SUP boards, costs are often added after the purchase. Often the paddle or backpack needs to be replaced. And it is at all questionable with many of the new brands whether the board will last several seasons. Because long-term experience exists in the very few cases.

From time to time, there are special promotions with extra accessories in the Bluefin Online Shop.

Hi Max,
I am looking for a SUP that is suitable for occasional fishing trips as well as for normal tours. Is the Bluefin Cruise 12 a good choice for these uses? Is it possible to mount a fishing rod attachment on the SUP? As an alternative I have found the SUP from iRocker Cruiser.
Best regards

Berit

Hi Benjamin,

I looked at your review of the Bluefin Cruise SUP and then also looked at the Cruise Carbon 10.8, which does seem a bit higher quality. Would you advise me against the latter as I am still a beginner?

And what about the Goosehill Premium SUP’s. I’ve read a lot of good things about them too. Unfortunately you can’t convert them to a kayak.

Which one is better, what do you think?

Benjamin

Hi Berit,

The Bluefin Cruise is for years one of the most popular paddle boards ever for good reasons and belongs in its price range to the absolute best. In terms of quality, the Goosehill boards can not keep up in my opinion. What is also very decisive for me, are the long-term experiences, also here everything speaks for Bluefin!

The Bluefin Cruise Carbon is without question even a bit higher quality. The very important stiffness is enormously pronounced. Also in the accessories is put overall again a notch on it.

If your budget allows it, there is of course nothing to stop beginners from getting started with a premium board…quite the opposite!

Many greetings,
Benjamin

Berit

Thank you very much, you helped me a lot ????

Benjamin

????… with pleasure. I am very glad that I could be of further help!

Many greetings,

Armin

First of all, big thanks for the detailed test.

I also want to buy my first paddle board. The plan is to go together with my girlfriend and a few bottles of beer or similar on the lake and paddle comfortably.

Should I then rather take the Bluefin Cruise 12 right away or is the 10.8 also enough for this? Alternative would be the iRocker All-Around 11.

Thank you very much.

If you have an affiliate link, feel free to share it with me ????

Kind regards from the Allgäu,
Armin

Benjamin

Hey Armin,
thanks!

In your place, I would then clearly reach for the Bluefin Cruise 12. For the extra space and carrying capacity alone, it makes sense. If you want to paddle more leisurely, that probably means one of you is sitting?

If, on the other hand, you want to do longer tours with two of you standing up, you’d better look at the Bluefin Cruise Tandem.

Best regards,
Benjamin
