Advisor: What Is Important in a SUP Double Paddle?
- Length: A very important criterion is the right length of the paddle. Here you will find a detailed guide on this topic. For a double or kayak paddle, you need to consider the width of your board in addition to your height. It is important that you can easily reach the water with both paddle blades while sitting or kneeling.
- Weight: Especially on longer trips, a heavy paddle weight can be quite exhausting. Paddles with aluminum shafts usually weigh around 1 kg (2.2 lbs) and belong to the heavy specimens. Much lighter paddles made of fiberglass or carbon are usually a bit more expensive but also much more comfortable and easier on the joints.
- Material: Different materials are used for the paddles. The cheapest are models with aluminum shaft and plastic blades, but these are also quite heavy. Much lighter, but also more expensive, are paddles made of fiberglass. Carbon paddles form the premium class and are by far the lightest, but also quite expensive. The boundaries between the individual materials are fluid, there are also specimens that are made from a combination of the above materials.
- Drip shields or drip rings: Drip rings are plate-shaped discs on the shaft that retain dripping water while paddling. When using a double paddle, one blade at a time is slanted upward after the paddle pull. At this stage, absorbed water can flow over the shaft and your hands. What is not a problem in the summer quickly becomes an icy problem in the colder seasons. If your paddle does not have a drip guard, you can retrofit one.
