Inflatable paddle boards and kayaks are much more convenient to transport and store than their classic, stiff competitors.

BUT that also means they always need to be inflated with air before use. And after use, the air must be squeezed out again.

With e-bikes becoming more and more popular, electric aids are now being used for paddle boarding.

When you buy a paddle board or inflatable kayak, it usually comes with a simple hand pump. This does its job, but if you want to get out on the water quickly or need to inflate more than just one board, you’ll appreciate electric pumps.

How Do You Find the Best Electric Pump for Your Paddle Board?

So you’re ready to trade in your hand pump for an electric model. I’ll show you what to look for in an electric pump for paddle boards. Equipped with the knowledge of the most important features of these e-pumps, you can make a good and, most importantly, informed decision.

The Perfect Model for You

The perfect pump should be compatible with all your paddle boards and other inflatable kayaks, air mattresses, swim islands and co. There are no standardized pump connections yet. So you have to deal with the different connection systems and adapters.

In terms of functionality, you should first pay attention to the achievable pressure range of the pump. Other comfort features are a two-stage system, which makes inflation faster, or a dual function to let the air out of the board as well. An automatic shut-off function can further protect your equipment.

Finally, the type of power source is most important. Some pumps require a car battery, some use rechargeable batteries, and still others draw their power from the cigarette lighter.

Compatibility

The output of the pump must be compatible with your paddle boarding. It would be ideal if the pump can also supply air to your air mattresses or inflatable kayak.

A standardized solution does not exist, which is why different connections and corresponding adapters are often used. For inflatable paddle boarding, however, it is often the Halkey-Roberts connection (also called H3, HR or H-valve). Individual manufacturers may deviate from this.

Those looking for the optimal pump face the dilemma of finding the one model that fits SUPs, kayaks and all the air mattresses.

Power Source

The manufacturers of the electric pump usually assume the case that you come by car. Namely, most pumps are powered by the car battery or cigarette lighter.

Some other models allow flexibility in the sense that they can also be powered by an external battery pack.

If you’re worried about having to call an ADAC after a paddle boarding trip, or you’re walking or biking to paddle boarding anyway, you should probably go for the external battery pack.

Tip: If you keep the motor running while pumping, you don’t have to worry about a dead car battery and you may increase the power of the battery and thus the inflation speed.

Achievable Pressure Range

You should be able to find out the optimal pressure either from your paddle boards owner’s manual or from the manufacturer’s website. The unit of measurement you’re looking for is called PSI. This refers to pounds per square inch.

For paddle boards, this is 95% in the range of 10 to 15 PSI. Inflatable boats are below this pressure level. Large waterscapes may require a higher value.

Most of the pumps reviewed here manage values of 15 to 20 psi, putting them right in the right pressure range for paddle boards.

Features

Electric pumps are either single-stage or two-stage models. The first blow air into the board until the desired pressure level is reached. The speed here depends on the strength of the pump.

The latter start with a high volume first and only increase the pressure in the second stage. The result is a significantly reduced inflation time.

Strong pumps fill the board with air faster, but they are also louder.

Practical in any case is the function to release the air through the pump again. This saves time and is much more convenient.

Pressure Indicator and Automatic Shut-off

Additional features such as a pressure display that allows you to track progress or an auto shut-off device can prove to be quite handy. The pressure indicator is typically a simple needle gauge or a small LCD display.

The automatic shut-off is an important safety feature that almost all pumps have now. Typically, you select a target pressure level and the pump will then operate until the appropriate PSI level is reached.

FAQ

How long does it take to inflate my paddle board with an electric pump?

The time varies from pump to pump and board to board. It should take 5 to 15 minutes for your board to be fully inflated.

While people with hand pumps have already wasted a lot of energy on the dull pumping up, you can get your full on paddling. Learn more about electric paddle board pumps.

How much PSI should I use to inflate my paddle board?

For all inflatable paddle boards, kayaks and air mattresses, you should always check the manufacturer’s specifications.Either in the instruction manual or on the official website you can find the corresponding values.

For paddle boards, a value in the range of 10 to 15 PSI is recommended. Like tower paddle boards with a maximum of 25 PSI, other paddle boards can often withstand more.

But from about 15 PSI, you will almost not be able to notice any difference anyway. Learn more about electric paddle board pumps.

What are the advantages of an electric paddle board pump?

boarding often and have to deflate each time for transport and storage, the time spent doing all that pumping adds up quickly. On a trip with friends and family, all that pumping can take a good half hour. This dampens your mood and takes away valuable time on the water.

The effort of pumping is not to be neglected. The first few jolts go quite easily. But in the double-digit PSI values it becomes very exhausting. And who wouldn’t prefer to have full power on the water.

With the function to let the air out of your board by pump, you also save a lot of time and nerves at the end of a tour. Learn more about electric paddle board pumps.

re electric paddle board pumps with rechargeable batteries or those that use the car as a power source better?

car as a power source better?
The batteries of electric pumps for paddle boards are not comparable to the batteries of modern cell phones. The pump batteries of lead or nickel-metal hydride type are costly to maintain.

Overcharging (hanging on the charging cable for too long) should be avoided, as should temperatures below zero degrees or excessive discharging.

Electrical engineer Daniel Martschin advises: “If possible, such batteries should not be discharged more than 60 percent and then recharged again soon, otherwise you lose storage capacity and the number of possible charging cycles is also reduced if they are handled poorly.”

The method using electricity from the car seems more practical. Anyone who has the option should go for it. Because also in terms of price, the batteries make themselves strongly felt. Learn more about electric paddle board pumps.

Should I store my paddle board inflated or folded?

several months or even the winter, you should first find a dry storage area and store the board there slightly inflated to about 5 PSI. See my guide on how to properly store paddle boards for more information. Learn more about electric paddle board pumps.

Can an electric pump destroy my paddle board due to too much PSI?

In theory, too much air pressure can cause cracks or even permanent damage to the hull. Practically, however, this is hardly possible. For one thing, you should find out in advance what is an appropriate pressure for your paddle board or other type of water sports equipment. For another, boards can withstand much higher pressures than the recommended PSI levels.

The pumps don’t work by hand like some pumps at gas stations, but you select a value for the pressure and then the pump blows a corresponding amount of air into the board. Once the value is reached, the pump shuts off automatically. Overfilling the board is also not possible with hand pumps. There is no automatic shut-off device here, but to get to PSI values beyond 17 to 18 by hand is very very exhausting. Tower Paddle Boards has stated on their website that their boards have been tested to 25 PSI and held up.

You definitely have to be careful with smaller water toys like inflatable animals and balls. Here, too much pressure can cause them to burst more quickly. The lower limit of the achievable pressure range can also be problematic. In some circumstances, the limits (typically 1 to 5 PSI as the lower limit) are already too much. Conclusion

Powerful e-pumps are convenient and equipment you’ll really come to appreciate over time. The more regularly you go paddle boarding or need to inflate an air mattress, the more often you’ll love this unique purchase.

Many people today are opting for inflatable boards because transporting them involves much less hassle. Electric pumps can reduce the stress of setting up and taking down even more. You can spend even more time on the water and use all your paddling power.

Unfortunately, alternatives to the featured hand and electric pumps are few and far between. Classic compressors, on the other hand, are unsuitable for paddle boards. Typically, they fall into one of two categories: Too weak for the high PSI or too slow (45+ minutes per board) as reported by customers.

Tip: Meanwhile, there are also more effective hand pumps with double stroke mode. In some cases, there are even triple action pumps (e.g. Fanatic HP6 Triple Action), with which manual inflation is much faster.
